Mario Frendo is a musician and academic at the University of Malta conducting research on opera, musical theatre, and philosophies related to the performing arts. He publishes with major international publication houses and works closely with the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence and the European Festivals Association.

Frendo played violin and viola with the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra before reading for a bachelor’s degree in theatre and obtaining a master’s degree in music composition tutored by composer Charles Camilleri in 2006. In 2013 he completed his doctoral studies at the University of Sussex, UK.

Frendo co-founded the Malta International Arts Festival in 2006 and remained its artistic director until 2013. During his tenure he worked with artists and ensembles including cellist Enrico Dindo, violinist Carmine Lauri, pianists Pietro de Maria and Roberto Cominati, theatre director Eugenio Barba and his Odin Teatret, choreographer Wayne McGregor, the Arditti String Quartet, and the Kronos Quartet, among others.
